What Our Students Have to Say

I feel this course was really worth of every penny, and exceeded expectations with every aspect. Im really happy all the things learned, and I felt very welcome from the beginning. Food was amazing! 😁 Only negative thing I can think about is that i had to leave too early. Even still I felt, that I got experience a lot and variety of things. Will be definitely recommending to other students! Thank you once again for everything and having me! Miss you and already planning when it will be possible to come back! 🤗

"The VetX Wildlife Capture & Care course has been one of the most hands-on and inspiring veterinary experiences of my life. Being a wildlife and zoo vet myself, my expectations were high. Not only did I improve my practical skills and confidence, I also learned a lot about the capture and immobilisation of different species, as well as conservation and human-wildlife conflicts. Hein very passionately shares his knowledge about african animals with his students, puts in a lot of effort to make a variety of captures possible and always encourages you to get out of your comfort zone. VetX works with very experienced vets, who are always happy to answer any question. Pierre gives amazing lectures, because he truly understands all veterinary topics to the core and his excitement for them makes it very easy to follow. Darting practice out of a helicopter was one of many highlights for me and because the programme closely works with incredible helicopter pilots and netgunners, students always get to be part of the action even if the vet is not needed to be there for relocating or checking an animal. I simply love the team's philosophy that everyone becomes a friend to them and it truly felt like that to me, so it was very hard for me to leave that special place again after three unforgettable weeks in South Africa."

“Coming out to South Africa to join the VetX Team was, without a doubt, the best decision I have made in a long time…. The time I spent working alongside them has created memories and friendships for life for me, and the spirit of the South African bush is something beyond the words I have to describe. The creatures of the bush are just magical, from the antelope species, to cheetahs and lions, and my favourite - giraffes, so having the opportunity to get close, to help them and learn new clinical techniques and to see them in their world from the sky was an experience that cannot be described easily, but it truly touched me to my heart. This course has motivated me to turn a dream of mine into a goal, establishing my love for veterinary medicine and conservation, and even becoming true motivation for studying my degree because before SA, I was beginning to question where my passions laid despite my lifelong love of veterinary medicine. Not any more. As a solo female traveller, I had my concerns about coming to somewhere like SA with all the bad press, yet not once did I not feel safe with the team and it has become a second home for me. I have learnt so much with them and they have inspired me to want to keep learning more, and at the end of the my stay I was not ready to return home and the tears fell. I hope to return to join the VetX Team soon, as they are some truly inspirational people to learn from. “

A dream come true "This was, and will forever be, one of the best experiences of my life! Getting to do veterinary work in one of the most spectacular places in the world with some of the world's most incredible animals was a dream come true and I'll treasure the memories forever. As well as the lectures, which were always really well delivered and super interesting, we also got to do all sorts of amazing practical things to prepare ourselves for the capture work, including practicing darting, riding in a helicopter, darting from a helicopter, practicing our injections in the back of a moving truck, and tracking cheetah. And then there was the capture work itself which was out-of-this-world level of fun, I never wanted it to end! Riding in the back of a pickup truck with a black wildebeest's horn in one hand and two syringes in the other, heading across a South African reserve at crazy speeds with an R44 helicopter flying right over our heads, on our way to collect another wildebeest that had just been net-gunned is something I will never forget and I can't wait to have more experiences like that again throughout my career as a vet. We also had lots of time to relax and take part in some other really fun activities outside of the course work, such as a horseback safari, surfing, visiting a wildlife ranch where we got to interact with young cheetahs; and game drives in which we got to see and get incredibly close to some of South Africa's most iconic animals, such as rhinos, zebra, various antelope species, giraffe, hippos, elephants and buffalo. The lodge where we were based was such a nice place to stay. Gathering round the fire as a group to chat and laugh was something we looked forward to every night, and I particularly enjoyed making use of the pool table... and the bar. The beds were super comfy and the food was absolutely delicious for every meal. The whole team at VetX are some of the nicest, most wonderful, incredible and fun people you could ever meet. Hein and Jo are awesome teachers, I knew I was learning from the best and they made me feel confident in my abilities which is something I find incredibly challenging even at the best of times. I owe them so much for all the good they did for me - everything they taught me and all the confidence they gave me has spurred me on even after leaving and it will stay with me for a very long time to come. I can't thank VetX enough for giving me this once-in-a-life time experience that has given me the chance to make a dream come true and has taught me so much about the wildlife veterinary world in South Africa and also about myself and what I am capable of. I am so grateful for the skills, knowledge and memories that this course gave me; they have made me a better person and I know they will help me become the great vet I hope to be."

"I have learned so much in only 3 weeks about so many topics. These people are so implicated on offering you the most knowledge they can about everything you’re gonna do and see during the course. I went without any expectation to realize my dream and what I found there was most that what I could expect. The fact that you are really useful and making a difference makes it even more intense! You’re really a part of it because everything you’re gonna do have to be done. Also, sharing this experience with people from all over the world that have commons points make it a special experience that you’re never gonna forgot. On top of that, the people who structure this course are very caring and do they best to make you as comfortable as possible. They want to share their knowledge and transmit their passion. I went there with a dream, I came back with a goal ✨"
